Since Karin Harvey was named Head Coach of the Montclair State University Women’s Basketball program eight years ago, the program has ascended into a dominant team in the Division-III Basketball world. A Head Coach acquires this success with coaching help & recruiting. The most undervalued position in this period of hegemony are the Assistant Coaches at Montclair State!
Ms. Courtney Cunningham is the Associate Head Coach. Cunningham is in her 7th season for the Red Hawks. She is brains behind the strategy for Montclair State- the designed plays, game day adjustments, scouting reports, & watching film.
The Assistant Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator is Mr. Brian Sansom. Since Coach Sansom arrived on campus four seasons ago, his affable personality has enabled him to create relationships with prospective players, their families, high school & Amateur Athletic Coaches, and everyone in between.
Please listen to their background, their coaching experiences, why they love of the game & their passion for their players at Montclair State! Let’s win that 3rd consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference crown & go dancing into the NCAA Tournament! Go Red Hawks!!! Click here for the Montclair State Athletic website.
James D’Angelo, Kazim Jones, & Chris Torres represent the senior class for Head Coach Daren Rowe. As a point guard, D’Angelo rarely commits turnovers over & is considered a strong passer. Despite his 5′-10″ frame, the Long Valley, NJ native has proved to be assertive with the basketball, driving to the lane when needed.
In his NCAA career, Kazim Jones has come of the bench to help the Red Hawks as a swingman guard & forward. The Newark, NJ native is one of the most coachable players on the roster. Each season he has added strength & quickness. Jones is described as a positive role model to the underclassmen & never complains!
Chris Torres is a player who comes off the bench as a power forward. When an opponent gains momentum against Montclair State, everyone at the Panzer Gymnasium knows who will enter the contest to show the Red Hawks refuse to be intimated! With a 6′-4″ frame, Chris creates opportunities by his aggressive approach on the floor, always relentless, never intimidated by the opposition.
Janitza Aquino & Melissa Tobie have been the dynamic duo for the past three seasons for Head Coach Karin Harvey. The senior Red Hawks have each have netted over 1,000 individual points, won over 100 games, earned multiple conference titles, & NCAA Tournament victories will exit after this season.
When Aquino releases the basketball, it defies gravity! She is unbelievable beyond the perimeter. Last January, the Kearny, NJ native nailed a miraculous (8) 3-point field goals, in a single half of a contest to set a school record!
Tobie epitomizes the ideal of a student athlete. Number 22 is a once in a generation type of player. After graduation & meeting the University criteria, Melissa will earn her place in the pantheon of Red Hawk grandeur- The Montclair State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Despite the success, their quest is the ultimate prize, a Division-III National Championship!

The key seniors who usually enter a game off the bench join me for this podcast are Kris Bergstol & KoKo Karajelian. Bergstol (6-5) , a New City, NY native, plays as a swing man (forward/guard) in his 2nd year for Head Coach Ted Fiore. (more…)
Ordel Goldson, Michael Spence, & Daniel Singleton are the big men who drive inside the paint for the Montclair State University Men’s Basketball team. Each gentleman discussed their experiences of the hardwood; the people who they emulated; the contributions they furnished to the Red Hawk basketball program; individual improvements to help the team; the relentless offseason conditioning; & the team spent holiday time to volunteer for urban city children at the recent Team Hill Tournament Classic.
Michael Spence (6′-10) is the obelisk of splendor for the Red Hawks as he has improved from last year. The center mentioned he doesn’t want to forget the disappointing season last year as a motivation tool for this season. Goldson (6′-7) the power-forward who is among the conference leaders in rebounding & scoring. Speaking of scoring, Singleton (6′-4) just a few years ago was getting time off the bench. Presently, he is really considered a “Duce” for Head Coach Ted Fiore. As a starter, Singleton just a pinch ahead of Goldson to lead the team in scoring.
I appreciate these gentlemen willing to appear on the podcast. The Men’s Basketball team has struggled this year to 7-13 overall record (3-10 New Jersey Athletic Conference). The lone seniors Brandon Sessoms & Ken Rubenstein were my guests. (more…)
